The Film Comment Podcast: Cannes 2025 #10 — The Voice of Documentary

Before the festival wrapped on May 24, Film Comment partnered with Cannes Docs, the nonfiction-focused section of the Marché du film, on a panel titled “The Voice of Documentary.” Moderated by FC Editor Devika Girish, the panel convened three practitioners of radical nonfiction—Eduardo Williams (The Human Surge 3), Brett Story (Union), and Zoya Laktionova (Ashes Settling in Layers on the Surface)—to unpack the ethical and practical ways in which documentaries use sound, voice, and audio to speak to us and shape us as listeners.

Presentation of the 20 HECTARES a new multimedia work by Zoya Laktionova and Kayarzyna Szyngiera. The Warsaw War Memorial Cemetery for Soviet Soldiers, also called the Mausoleum, occupies almost twenty hectares in the city center, close to Mokotowski Field, which is five and a half times larger than it is. We propose to rethink this space and the memory it holds through five renovation concepts.

     Zoya Laktionova is a filmmaker, editor, visual artist  - was born in Mariupol (Ukraine) in 1984.  She uses moving images, photography, and texts in her works. In her artistic practice, she adopts micro-history, auto-ethnography and creative storytelling to unfold the complexity of greater events.
